How are Yoga and Ayurveda Related?

Loading

Ayurveda and Yoga are major components of ancient history that are practised to date to promote physical, mental and spiritual upliftment. These ancient practices are different branches of life, but both of them have the same Vedic roots originating from India. Their approach to good health and well-being resembles various ways. In this blog, we will learn about the connection between Ayurveda and Yoga, which will support the reasons for adopting both these practices for the betterment of your life.

How do Ayurveda and Yoga Coincide?

The focus of both Yoga and Ayurveda is the cultivation of sattva in order to have clarity of mind and enhance your ability to address and differentiate between various emotions and psychological conditions. One can acquire healing and relief through Ayurveda for various health conditions and enhance productivity by including Yoga and meditation in one’s life

Ayurvedic Yoga helps an individual to effectively understand the framework of Prakriti, Vikriti and Gunas to determine the needs and challenges of your body, allowing you to lead a healthy life.

Learning about Ayurvedic helps you deal with chronic diseases by maintaining health-related imbalances in the body.

It is essential to know that both Yoga and Ayurveda have been interconnected forevermore, and the more you understand their connection, the better you will be able to employ their healthy practices on yourself to foster healthy results.

The Philosophical and Spiritual Connection Between Ayurveda and Yoga

Yoga and Ayurveda play an intertwined role in contributing to the healing of mind, body and soul. Ayurveda primarily focuses on maintaining physical health by identifying the cause and providing treatment with nature’s touch, whereas Yoga prioritises relaxation of the mind by clearing impeding thoughts and purifying consciousness.

Adapting to the practices separately does show you positive results; however, both practices complement each other well, fostering a much more effective result that rejuvenates your mind, body and soul. Ayurveda and Yoga are derived from Vedas and ancient Sanskrit texts that have existed for centuries.

The Teachings of Ayurveda and Yoga

Ayurveda and Yoga are both ancient practices that incorporate the Vedic teachings. The origin of Yoga comes from Yajur Veda, while the ultimate Ayurvedic rejuvenation originated from Atharva Veda and  Rigveda.

Both practices concentrate on the significance of maintaining a healthy body and mind to achieve the four aims of life known as Dharma (duty), Kama (desire), Artha (wealth) and Moksha (Liberation).

Yoga and Ayurveda understand that balancing doshas (tumours), dhatus (tissues), and malas (waste products leads to a healthy life. Both these ancient practices promote the use of diet, herbs, asanas, meditations, pranayama, mantras, astrology, prayer and puja (worship), along with rituals to maintain optimal healing of the body and ensure a healthy life.

The Physical and Mental Health Benefits of Combining Ayurveda and Yoga

It is only now that the world is coming to know about the magical results of both these practices.

Yoga is a relaxing form of asanas and pranayama, along with mantras and prayer, that allows mental health to be in an optimal state.  Mind is the operating system of our body that can be corrupted by anxiety and stress. With Yoga, you enter a state of peace, which allows you to connect with your own self thoroughly.

Ayurveda focuses on the rest of your health by using natural herbs, shrubs, and massages to free your body from the intense pressure of your day-to-day responsibilities. It primarily works on strengthening your immune system, allowing your body to fight against the medical condition and lead a healthy life.

Transform with Ananta Ayurveda by indulging in these ancient practices and be free from stress, anxiety and physical conditions for the rest of your life.

What are Ayurveda doshas, and how do they balance mind, body and energy

Loading

What are Ayurveda doshas?

Doshas are different variants that regulate different functions in mind and body. Each individual has these doshas and deeper understanding of these energies can lead to overall well being, increased vitality and inner harmony. When a person is born, they come with a specific combination of doshas that are crucial in managing balance between daily life and inner harmony.

Yin Yang representing Ayurveda Doshas: Pitta, Kapha, Vata, for holistic health and wellness.

The three doshas

The three doshas named Vata, Pitta and Kapha that govern mental, emotional and physical state of well being show their primary qualities. Let’s dive into each of them.

  • Vata (air and ether)

Vata controls movements such as breathing and circulation. People with Vata tend to be fully energetic and have creativity in mind. They also learn quickly.

  • Pitta (fire and water)

This dosha focuses on the metabolism and digestion of the body. Settled and well-balanced dosha offers determination and intelligence, and high pitta results in impatience or anger in the person.

  • Kapha (earth and water)

Kapha with elements of water and earth have control over stability and lubrication of the body. When the Kapha dosha is in balance it provides the body with strength, contentment, and a calm mind.

Achieve Inner Balance: How Ayurveda’s Doshas Influence Your Health

What happens when these doshas are imbalanced

When doshas are imbalanced, it can lead to the accumulation of toxins known in Ayurveda as ‘ama’ in the body.

  • Symptoms of Vata imbalance

If a person has an imbalance in Vata, it’s common to experience issues such as dry, rough skin and interrupted sleep. The person may also feel constipation and sleep disturbances occasionally.

  • Symptoms of Pitta imbalance

Issues such as loose motions or diarrhoea, red burning, sensations, and skin with rashes are mostly linked to Pitta imbalance. Pitta’s inherent heat and inflammation can lead to skin issues, including eczema and rosacea.

  • Symptoms of Kapha imbalance

Physical signs such as water retention, sensitivity to cold, fatigue, joint stiffness are symbolised when the Kapha is out of balance. Some mental and emotional signs like overacting and depression are also seen when the person has a body with unmaintained Kapha.

When doshas are in balance, they contribute to overall well being including  mental ease and relief from chronic conditions. Let’s take a look at some of the approaches to get doshas in balance.

  • For Vata

Avoid inflammatory oils such as vegetable oils, refined oil, canola oil and fried foods. Instead, opt for healthy fats like ghee. These help with digestion and lead to balanced Vata.

  • For Pitta

Fresh fruits and vegetables are best for Pitta as they have cooling properties that  help calm down the fiery nature of this dosha. These foods are helpful because they can soothe inflammation and aid digestion. Beyond diet, activities such as yoga, meditation and swimming are highly beneficial.

  • For Kapha

A light and easily digestible diet is ideal for balancing Kapha. This food supports metabolism and provides nourishing energy without overwhelming the digestive system.

Benefits of balancing doshas

Maintaining these doshas balances offers a holistic array of benefits.

  • Increased energy levels

Balanced doshas support optimal functioning of the body systems, which means better digestion and effective nutrient absorption,

  • Improves mental clarity

When the doshas are in balance, they give you the proper clarity of mind while allowing you to have a proper, centred state of mind.

  • Holistic harmony

Achieving doshas in balance, not only improves the day to day health but also fosters a deeper connection with one self, contributing to long term wellness and resilience.
