The seven Dhatus
According to Ayurveda, our bodies are made of seven types of tissues, which are called “Dhatus”. These are the building blocks that have different functions. All Dhatus work together to keep us healthy and active as well.- Rasa [Plasma] – Rasa is considered to be the nourishment fluid. It refers to the juice of the food that you digest. It is the foremost form of nutrition for the body. Good Rasa makes well-nourished cells, which help in keeping you energetic.
- Rakta [Blood] – Rakta is the Blood which flows through the veins of the body. Rakta carries oxygen and nutrients to all the body parts, and it ensures that each cell has what it needs to work.
- Mamsa [Muscle] – Mamsa is the muscle tissue of your body. It gives form and strength to your body.
- Meda [Fat] – Meda is the body fat which cushions the body. It protects your organs of the body, thus keeping you warm.
- Asthi [Bones] – Asthi refers to the bones. They provide structure to your body. It also aids your movements.
- Majja [Bone marrow and nervous system] – Majja helps in filling the gaps in your bones. It assists in developing new blood cells and carrying messages from the brain to the other body parts.
- Shukra [reproductive tissue] – Shukra are the reproductive tissues which are responsible for your body’s strength and reproduction.
Rasa Dhatu– formation and significance
It is the foremost tissue which is formed after the digestion of the food. It constructs and maintains the other tissue cells in your body. It helps in nourishment, providing strength and immunity. Its formation initiates in your digestive system. When you eat, your body breaks down the food in the stomach. It usually takes around a week to finish.
